When Reason Meets Its Limits
Understanding Irrationality in Negotiation
Taking place online 27–28 February 2026
In an age of polarization, digital uncertainty, and complex global crises, negotiators are increasingly confronted with behaviour that seems irrational. Yet what if “irrationality” does not signal the absence of reason, but rather a difference in perception, information, or cultural logic? The 2026 e-Conference brings together diverse scholars and practitioners from around the world to explore what happens when our established notions of reason meet their limits – and how we can still negotiate effectively beyond them.
Drawing from psychology, political theory, and communication studies, participants will explore how bias, emotion, and perception shape negotiations across cultural and ideological divides. The sessions will offer practical approaches for engaging with actors who appear unreachable or unpredictable, learning how to recognize when to disengage, define red lines, and transform emotional dynamics into constructive dialogue. Finally, the program also looks ahead to the new frontiers of negotiation – where irrationality emerges not only from individuals but also from systems, institutions, and technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.
Blending research and real-world experience from fields such as diplomacy, neuroscience, business negotiation, and technology ethics, the IGN e-Conference 2026 invites participants to rethink the boundaries of rationality and discover how understanding the “irrational” can open pathways to creativity, clarity, and more effective negotiations.
The IGN e-Conference
The IGN e-Conference is an annual online conference, taking place over multiple days. It is not an academic conference, instead aiming at enabling a conversation on negotiation-related topics between practitioners from different global contexts and with different experience levels. Every year, the e-Conference explores a different issue or topic through a Keynote Address by a noted expert in the field, as well as multiple interactive conference sessions that are focused on different aspects of the overarching topic. Through participatory formats such as workshop sessions besides presentations, the e-Conference offers the opportunity to expand participants’ network through a broad range of attendees from various backgrounds.
Conference Sessions
The 2026 e-Conference features three core sessions, each addressing a distinct dimension of irrationality and exploring strategies for responding when counterparts act beyond established norms of reason, reciprocity, or dialogue. Guided by leading experts, these sessions will combine theoretical insight with practical discussion, offering participants the chance to engage directly with facilitators and colleagues. Designed to be both interactive and reflective, the program encourages the exchange of experiences, perspectives, and tools for navigating complex negotiation dynamics.
Further details on the individual sessions, including details on facilitators and speakers, are be published on our website under 'Program' and on the IGN social media channels.
