Negotiating an International Agreement on Large Movements of Refugee
We are pleased to announce that the Global Negotiation Conference will once again be taking place at the University of Bern. The negotiation simulation on the final day of the conference will be dealing with international migration. To register for the conference please consult the participation page.
Speakers
The following speakers will be conducting workshops and making presentations as part of the GNC 2016.
Julia Palmiano Federer
Julia works as a Program Officer in the Mediation program at swisspeace, where she is conducting her doctoral research in the framework of the Swiss National Science Foundation funded project, “Are mediators norm entrepreneurs?”. Julia holds a MA in International Affairs from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. She is a PhD Candidate at the University of Basel. Before joining swisspeace in 2013, she interned with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Human Rights Watch and the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue.

Shaden Khallaf
Shaden has worked at the UNHCR since 1998 and is currently the Senior Policy Officer, UNHCR Regional Bureau for the Middle East and North Africa. She has professional experience and academic background in international human rights law, globalization, democratization, and gender issues in the Middle East and North Africa. Shaden also has experience analyzing political transformations and their impact on population displacement and human rights, especially of Iraqi refugees before, during, and after the March 2003 war. Throughout the Middle East and from UNHCR Headquarters, she has worked of refugee status determination, finding durable solutions for refugees, improving conditions of detention, addressing the needs of refugee women and children, promoting wider respect for international human rights standards, strengthening institutional advocacy and public awareness about UNHCR, and strategic policy planning.

Mikkel Gudsøe
Mikkel is an expert in negotiation, body language and dispute resolution and an experienced teacher at international and national level. He also works as a Chief Attorney responsible for International Trade, Intellectual Property Rights and Mediation at the federation Danish Fashion & Textile. Mikkel is an external lecturer in Legal Negotiation at Master´s Level at the University of Aarhus, School of Law (Business & Social Sciences) and has given master classes and seminars all over the world.

Ida Manton
Ida studied at the University in Skopje,as well as a Masters in Diplomacy and International Relations from Leiden University and Clingendael in The Netherlands. Ida currently teaches International Negotiations, Diplomacy and Contemporary practice at various academies and universities in Macedonia and abroad, including The Hague, Warsaw, and Prague. In her over 10 years of professional experience, she has conducted lectures and presentations on variety of topics including: international negotiations and diplomacy.

René Pfromm
René is an expert for legal negotiations. He combines broad practical negotiation experience as a lawyer with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP in Europe and China, and extensive experience in negotiation consulting, training and teaching. His clients comprise leading international and domestic law firms and companies in Europe and Asia. René is a co-designer and faculty member of various executive education and leadership programs, including the WHU Negotiations Program at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management. René regularly teaches and speaks at premier universities in Europe and China.

Rudolf Schüssler
​
Rudolf Schüssler is professor of philosophy in the ‘philosophy & economics’ course of studies at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. His research areas include environmental ethics, issues of justice, and ethics in negotiations. He is group leader in a current German federal ministry project on the social effects of German energy policy. Apart from that he is a member of the group ‘Processes of International Negotiation’ and an associated researcher at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations.

Migration Scholars
The Swiss Network of Young Migration Scholars provides anyone within the field of academic research with a platform for the discussion and exchange of ideas in the field of migration studies. Founded in Berne on 14 August 2014 its aim is to encourage the cooperation amongst young researchers from different scientific disciplines, universities and language regions.

swisspeace is a practice-oriented peace research institute. It analyses the causes of violent conflicts and develops strategies for their peaceful transformation. swisspeace aims to contribute to the improvement of conflict prevention and conflict transformation by producing innovative research, shaping discourses on international peace policy, developing and applying new peacebuilding tools and methodologies, supporting and advising other peace actors, as well as by providing and facilitating spaces for analysis, discussion, critical reflection and learning.
Corneliu Bjola
Corneliu is Associate Professor of Diplomatic Studies at the University of Oxford. He previously taught at McMaster University and the University of Toronto. He was a research fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a Visiting Fellow at the Australian Defense Force Academy. Bjola’s general research interests lie at the intersection of international diplomacy, global governance and international ethics. He is the recipient of the 2014 OxTALENT award for enhancing students' learning experience using social media apps awarded by the Oxford Committee on Teaching and Learning Enhanced with Technology.
